Safety Management Training Academy (SMTA) is a robust training program on safety management for the air medical and critical care community offered by AAMS. The program provides a comprehensive foundation in the science and application of the discipline of safety systems for current and future leaders in emergency medical transport.

2015
The 2015 Scholarship recipient is, Flight Paramedic Randy Scott, from the University of Utah AirMed program.
Randy is the Safety Chairperson at AirMed. He is directly involved in developing safety processes and procedures at AirMed, and conducts safety and survival training year around. Most recently he has undertaken line operations safety audits to improve safety compliance with flight crews at AirMed’s seven bases, operating both rotor and fixed wing aircraft. Randy obtained his Medical Transportation Safety Professional (MTSP-C) Credential in March of 2016 (certification #15).

2016 Scholarship recipient is Justin Koper, FP-C of HealthNet Aeromedical Services.
In recommending Justin for the Tim Hynes SMTA Scholarship, HealthNet Aeromedical Services President and CEO Clinton Burley said that beyond serving as the Base 1 representative to the program’s Safety Committee, “...he is one of few who actively look for new avenues to impact safety and make a difference for his peers. ...In short, he makes meaningful impact across our entire operation.” Mr. Koper has a keen interest in operational safety and Safety Management Systems (SMS) and plans to use his SMTA knowledge to help manage HeathNet safety metrics.

2017 Scholarship recipient is Darrin Butcha, BS, NRP, FP-C from Air Evac Lifeteam
Darrin earned an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Medical Services from Vincennes University after earning his EMT-B certification in 2008, he decided to pursue further certification. He earned his paramedic license, during this time, along with working as a paramedic, Darrin also served as a volunteer firefighter, hazardous materials response team member, public safety diver, and an instructor. In 2012 he obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Homeland Security. Throughout working as a paramedic he also continued to engross himself into emergency and critical care medicine in order to prepare himself for his pinnacle goal, serving as a flight paramedic. In 2013, he was afforded this opportunity by Air Evac Lifeteam. Darrin was able to become a contributor and team member of the Association of Air Medical Services. Here he has written articles and editorials pertaining to safety topics specific to helicopter EMS. Darrin has an ongoing commitment to the safety of all those within the EMS and fire communities.

2019 Scholarship recipient is Brent Tracy, BA, FP-C from Humboldt General Hospital in Winnemucca, Nevada.
Mr. Tracy's nomination hightlighted that he has been a constant advocate for safety and is apossionate about operational safety and Safety Management Systems (SMS). He hopes to leverage what he learns at SMTA to increase his organization's risk mitigation profile and implement best safety practices.
